The Mole Agent made history with its Oscar nomination, Nicolas Molina’s 3rd film was selected in HOT DOCS, we honored Alfredo Castro’s trajectory in theatre, television and domestic and international films with an exclusive video, Chilean films received 8 prizes in Toulouse, and we wrapped up the first edition of CinemaChile Market - Industry Sessions, with 5 invited guests and 10 Chilean producers. This month the creative vision of two young emerging talents caught our attention, Constanza Lobos (director) and Arimsay Fuentes (producer), who participated in SANFIC's Series Lab with their project Insomne, taking home the CinemaChile Prize. Insomne is a dramedy that occurs in a post-pandemic Santiago and follows a young woman dealing with the issues of intimacy, codependency and loneliness. A feminist and urban take on millenial anxiety, the project stood out for its fresh and innovative outlook and creative potential.
“Insomne presents a super overwhelming universe, but it is balanced with the closeness and warmth of the relationships between the characters. It is a series that places a lot of emphasis on friendship, love, and bonds that, in a scenario like this, is the only refuge that remains”, Constanza told us.
The CinemaChile award consists of participation in a series market during 2021 and a mentoring session focused on the internationalization of the project.
“In these times this type of opportunity is very much needed, as it is making room for new voices. We feel an urgency to share our stories, so that we incorporate more layers of meaning into our experiences, says Arimsay.
Together they worked on the short film January first, directed by Constanza and produced by Arimsay and currently in post-production, and also on the documentary The Sky is Red by Francina Carbonell (IDFA 2020), where they were co-scriptwriters and associate producers.
It has been a time of loss for many, and it is important to grieve collectively, honoring those who have passed and left a mark in our hearts and in society.
This month we want to shine a light on a Chilean icon, who brought joy to audiences through theatre, television and film. Tomás Vidiella (1937-2021), brought pep and joy to classic films that include Ricardo Larraín’s El entusiasmo (1998), Silvio Caiozzi’s Cachimba (2004) and more recently, The memory of my father by Rodrigo Bacigalupe Lazo, for which he won the Best Actor prize in SANFIC.
We honor him and his memory. His work for the development of culture and the arts in Chile lives on eternally.
