“My Chilean Family”: Roots, Identity and Belonging Arrive to our Tuesday of Chilean Series

"A fascinating life story, beautifully told by filmmakers". "This has certainly been one of the most alluring shows I’ve ever seen". "I believe in television again." These are some of the comments that appeared on social media after the broadcast of one of the first episodes of My Chilean Family (2019), a series that stars in a new edition of our Tuesday of Chilean Series.

With an in-depth look at the identity ties of Chileans living around the world, the universality of the series manages to challenge and connect with global audiences of all ages. And, through a story that outlines belonging and transcends borders and languages, My Chilean Family captures the emotional complexity of living in a globalized world.

Each episode highlights the consequences of migratory processes and uprooting, along with the strong encouragement that displaced people feel for knowing their ancestors. The series covers diverse stories, including a Palestinian woman living in complex conditions in the West Bank as a result of the Israeli occupation, up to a woman who had never left Sweden and who lands in the Araucania (southern Chile) to discover her Mapuche roots.

Winner of a 2016 CNTV Fund and broadcasted by Chilevisión in 2019, the series was produced by the production company Surreal, led by Cristián Leighton and Daniela Bunster, The duo has been working for more than 20 years on a large and diverse selection of cultural and heritage documentaries. Focused on boosting identity and belonging, their works have been screened at festivals such as FIDMARSEILLE, NYFF, FIDOCS and BAFICI.

They are currently producing the series “Adoptados”, a production that, as its name indicates, will bring us closer to adoption and childhood through children who were adopted between the 1970s and 1990s in Chile, mainly by foreigners. As adults, these people will look for their biological origins as well as the story they had before they were adopted.

As we look forward to the premiere of Adoptados in 2021, we invite you to watch two episodes of My Chilean Family.
