CHILEAN FILM ACADEMY CHOOSES “EL AGENTE TOPO” TO REPRESENT CHILE IN THE OSCARS

CHILEAN FILM ACADEMY CHOOSES “EL AGENTE TOPO” TO REPRESENT CHILE IN THE OSCARS

  • It is the first time that the Chilean candidate for the Oscars has been chosen by the recently created Chilean Film Academy.
  • The moving and applauded film by Maite Alberdi, which will also represent us at the Goya Awards, opens today in virtual theaters of the Cinemarkand Cinépolis cinemas.

Chile already has a representative for the Oscar. It is "The Mole Agent", the acclaimed and award-winning film by Maite Alberdi that had its international premiere at the Sundance Film Festival before touring other competitions such as Karlovy Vary, San Sebastián and the IDFA of the Netherlands that begins today.

The documentary, which will also represent Chile in the race for a Goya 2021 nomination, has captivated both critics and audiences for the emotions it generates in viewers. It is a journey that begins as a comedy but finds other nuances throughout its development, leading us to think about a topic as universal and important as the treatment we give to older adults. It is a film about oblivion and the vital energy of a generation that is often discarded.

The announcement is another great achievement for the documentary that tells what happens when Rómulo, a private investigator, is hired to investigate the health status of a client’s mother, who lives in a nursing home. To carry out the mission, he hires Sergio, an 83-year-old widowed man who must enter the asylum as a private investigator.

"The Mole Agent" has been conquering the American public since Sundance, and now it can be seen in Chile. It opens today in the virtual theaters of the Cinemark and Cinépolis cinemas exclusively.

"It is the first time that Chile has chosen a documentary to represent us at the Oscars and only the second that it is a female director," explains Giancarlo Nasi, president of the Chilean Film Academy. "With this, Chile moves towards greater inclusion of women and diverse voices in our cinema, our culture and our society in general."

Alberdi, for her part, celebrates that the documentary is gaining ground. "It is a trend that has been changing in recent times, and we love having the possibility of building this path thinking that documentaries are films and are part of the industry."

The election occurs at a time when the Chilean Film Academy has carried out in recent months a work of promotion and support of national cinema in the world. "The Academy was consolidated this year as the legitimate representative of Chilean filmmakers compared to the sister Academies," Nasi highlights. “We have a fluid relationship with the United States Academy. Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Cultures, now the Academy co-finances the campaigns of our representative to the Goya and Oscars. Months of a lot of work await us in the campaign that we will do together with the team of "The mole agent". The Academy, when financing the campaigns for the Goya and Oscar awards, “establishes a coherent and stable system over time, where we will pass on the learning of one year to the representative of the next. Thus, the objective is to create a long-term policy that allows us to be permanently present at the Oscars ”, he concludes.
