CINEMACHILE’S QUICK LOOK AT EFM 2021: Producers and projects not to be missed!

CINEMACHILE’S QUICK LOOK AT EFM 2021: Producers and projects not to be missed!

The 25 producers attending the virtual EFM bring films and projects that are charting the coordinates of a new generation of Chilean cinema, where dystopian fiction features, LGBTQ+ themes, and arthouse documentaries represent the diversity of our national scene. They’re bringing the upcoming films and series of outstanding Chilean directors, including Claudia Huaiquimilla, Elisa Eliash, Nicolás Molina, Oscar Godoy, and Andrés Waissbluth. The debuts in development by promising directors such as Diego Céspedes, Gabriela Pena, Juan Pablo Arias, and Sebastián Ayala will also seek to broaden their international networks.

Here’s a preview of the outstanding films and projects that will seek alliances to achieve their development and finalization, as well as the names of the filmmakers charting the future of our cinema!

Chilean films completed or in post-production at EFM 2021:

Roberto Doveris (Niña Niño), director of Plants (Berlinale, 2016) and co-producer of Potential Victim by Nicolás Guzmán (Tallinn Black Nights, 2018) and The Prince by Sebastián Muñoz (Venice, 2019), arrives at EFM with Patient(ly) Enduring Suffering, a comedy about the Chilean healthcare system directed by Constanza Fernández (A Map for a Talk, Frameline 2012). In post-production, seeking festivals for a world premiere.

Clara Taricco (Mala Parte) brings Fever, the third film by Elisa Eliash (Here I am, Here I am not, BAFICI, 2012). An adventure film about 21st-Century childhood, the film begins with a classic argument in children’s literature, coming across mutant and psychedelic images on the way. Selected to WIP at Guadalajara 2020. In post-production and in search of distribution.

Pablo Calisto (Equeco), producer of Little White Lie by Tomás Alzamora (Miami, 2017), brings History and Geography by Bernardo Quesney, a dramatic comedy starring big national actors like Amparo Noguera, Catalina Saavedra, and Steevens Benjamin. The film follows a television actress who returns to her hometown with the motive of recovering her old fame. In post-production and in search of a sales agent.

Pepe Rovano (Totoral Films) brings a self-directed documentary that narrates the rebellious story of a son of a genocide attempting to repair his past. The intriguing non-fiction drama is called Bastard. The legacy of a criminal. In post-production and in search of distribution.

Josephine Schroeder (Pequén Producciones), selected this year in BERLINALE TALENTS, will also attend the market with Pirópolis, the third feature film by Nicolás Molina (FLOW, Sheffield, 2018), a documentary that portrays the sequence of catastrophic events experienced by a team of firefighters in Valparaíso, Chile. In post-production and in search of a world premiere.

Pablo Greene (Lanza Verde) brings the long-awaited second feature film by Claudia Huaiquimilla about the juvenile detention system, My Brothers Dream Awake, selected to Ventana Sur’s COPIA CERO and winner of FicValdivia’s WIP section. Her first feature, Bad Influence, awarded in Toulouse and Havana, positioned her as an outstanding new voice in Chilean cinema. Completed and in search of a sales agent.

Chilean projects in development at EFM 2021:

Francisco Greene (Suroeste Films) brings Frontera, a series about a young prosecutor who travels to the Andean plateau to solve a crime of two border patrol officers. Directed by Oscar Godoy, who returns to the screen after Bala Loca (Chilevisión, Netflix) a series nominated to the Platinos, the Fénix Awards, and the Peabodys in 2017. In development and in search of financing.

Maximiliano Scheleff (Pajareza Films) is going with the debut of Juan Pablo Arias, a director who has explored arthouse terror with his short films La historia de los monstruos (AFI FEST, 2019) and Hombre (Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse, 2018), and who will now submerge himself in the isolation of Chile’s Patagonia with the thriller Karukinka. In development and in search of financing.

Bruno Bettati (Jirafa), producer of award-winning films such as The Summer of Flying Fish by Marcela Said (Quincena, 2013) and Voice Over by Cristián Jiménez (Toronto, 2014), brings La isla de las gaviotas, LGBTQ+ themed first feature by Chilean actor Sebastián Ayala (The Prince, Venice, 2019), the coming-of-age story of a teenage “transformista”. In development and in search of international co-production.

Picho García (Grieta Cine), who arrives at EFM after his run in the recent Cinemart at IFFR PRO, brings Here the silence is heard by Gabriela Pena, a hybrid documentary that attempts to make sense of the family wounds caused by exile, winner of the 2020 Open City London development fund. In development and in search of international co-production.

Claudio del Valle (Insomnio Films) brings Mamá Gol, a film that mixes drama and comedy to tell the story of a nurse who decides to secretly train her husband’s football team, without imagining that she’ll have to challenge the club’s mafia ownership. In development and in search of international co-production.

Giancarlo Nasi (Quijote) brings The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, first feature by director Diego Céspedes, winner of the Cannes Cinefondation award in 2019 with The Summer of the Electric Lion. This LGBTQ+ feature-length debut portrays the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s in a mining town in the north of Chile. Winner of the Industry Award at San Sebastián 2020. In development and in search of international co-production.

María Elena Wood (María Wood Producciones), outstanding producer and director with more than 30 years of experience in the creation and production of television content. You may contact her to find out more.
