Made-in-Chile horror, animation, and suspense arrive at Ventana Sur 2020

Made-in-Chile horror, animation, and suspense arrive at Ventana Sur 2020

With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Art and Heritage (MINCAP) and CinemaChile, subsidiary brand of ProChile, national cinema professionals participate through this Friday at the most important audiovisual market in Latin America with their best projects.

Ventana Sur, created by Cannes’ Marché du Film  along with the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts of Argentina (INCAA, in Spanish), and with support from Creative Europe, gave the go-ahead to another edition — online and in-person — that will take place until Friday, December 4. For many of our country’s film producers, the event is the first stop on their journey toward internationalization, and although the pandemic that is still convulsing our planet won’t allow for a massive arrival in Buenos Aires, the market will include the participation of hundreds of professionals from the audiovisual sphere through its online platform.

Of these participants, there will be more than 40 Chilean producers and directors exhibiting their best new projects, belonging to genres — horror, for example — and in formats carried out using techniques like animation.

Part of the talented delegation is four film and television producers who will work online at Ventana Sur thanks to support from the Ministry of Culture, the Arts and Heritage through the Support Program for Participation in International Markets led by the Council for the Arts and the Audiovisual Industry (CAIA). They are Nicolás Acuña, Carolla Fuentes, Bruno Bettati, and Jorge Olguín, who will receive additional support from CinemaChile through a virtual stand.

CHILE IN THE MARKET’S OFFICIAL SECTIONS

“Copia Cero” is a category aimed at improving the circulation, distribution, and internationalization of Latin American films in post-production. Participating there will be My Brothers Dream Awake by Claudia Huaiquimilla, produced by Lanza Verde and Inefable. The story gives us a close look at a juvenile prison and a group of young detainees’ eagerness to escape it.

In “Animation!”, whose objective is to bolster Latin American animation by opening paths forward and eliminating obstacles, Hain will participate in the Pitching sessions, where Alejandra Jaramillo will lead the project, produced by Gigante Azul Producciones and Pinda Producciones. This action/thriller film focuses on young members of the Selk’nam tribe who are tormented by spirits during the initiation ritual for which the film is named.

Participating in the same space will be the TV series Three Tickets by Catalina Fontecilla and Paulina Díaz, produced by Pájaro Studios. The production focuses on how a non-binary hyena who loves the nightlife, an albino giraffe with sophisticated taste, and a shamanic monkey live happily in a poliamorous relationship until one of them wants to integrate a fourth partner.

Another series to participate in Animation! is Irl Squad by Chilean candidate to the Oscars in 2017, Fernanda Frick. In it, we will see three friends who met through an online game. One day, as the three girls are playing, they unleash a strange spell that brings all the game’s monsters into the real world.

Taking place in parallel is “Blood Window”, aimed at fantasy genre projects recognizable as horror, science fiction, and fantasy, as well as productions that combine these subgenres with other recognizable categories of suspense, action, crime drama, dark comedy, and/or other variations among this set. Arriving at Blood Window Lab will be Matria by Sandra Arriagada, produced by Lucio Rojas, a bloody revenge thriller starring Daniela Vega and Gaston Pauls. Also present will be Apps, also by Arriagada along with José Miguel Zúñiga, Lucio Rojas, and Camilo León; four stories in which an app will open the doors to terror.

In addition, a new category has opened up in the market, giving space to screenplays of the future. “Where The Film Begins” is an initiative created to grant a varied selection of scripts the possibility to transcend borders and land in the international market. Taking part there will be Decorous Woman by Natalia Luque, produced by Cecilia Otro at Hiedra, a story about a hairdresser who decides to go into debt to make herself feel attractive again.

THE DIVERSE BRIEFCASE OF NEW AND CURRENT PROJECTS FEATURED BY CHILE

Nicolás Acuña of Promocine is one of the four producers backed by MINCAP. During these few days, he will be promoting Almonacid, a crime drama whose protagonist is a female detective of Mapuche origin, written by screenwriter Julio Rojas (The Life of Fish).

On her part, Carola Fuentes from La Ventana Cine presents Ancestral Secret by José Manuel Loyola, a non-fiction series in development in search of co-production. In parallel, Bruno Bettati — representing production house Jirafa — exhibits the project in development The Gospel According to Us, directed by Gustavo Graef Marino, a dramedy / rock musical in search of a sales agent; and director Jorge Olguín of Olguínfilms features La forma del miedo directed by himself and produced by Carol Campos.

Meanwhile, the talent of multiple Chilean producers will also take part in the Producers Network, a platform created to encourage relationships and international cooperation between production professionals. In addition, director of CinemaChile Constanza Arena will moderate two conversations that include the presence of two big guests: Antoine Sebire, director of the Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine, and Dennis Ruh, director of the European Film Market (EFM) at the Berlin Film Festival.

Starting today, CinemaChile, subsidiary brand of ProChile and the Association of Film and Television Producers (APCT), has a virtual movie theater called CinemaChille Screening Room available to exhibit, before the most select players of the international industry, the films This is Cristina by Gonzalo Maza, Night Shot by Carolina Moscoso, Death Will Come and Shall Have Your Eyes by José Luis Torres Leiva, Lemebel by Joanna Reposi, Los Fuertes (“The Strong Ones”) by Omar Zúñiga, La Verónica  by Leo Medel, and Jailbreak Pact by David Albala.
