The plurinational reality of Chile comes to our screens with the documentary series “Kulmapu”

The plurinational reality of Chile comes to our screens with the documentary series “Kulmapu”

Two weeks ago, in our Thursday of Chilean Cinema, we invited you to watch two films about the resistance of the Mapuche people, in order to generate a dialogue around the situation in Araucanía, southern Chile. Now this relevant topic has taken our screens, but in serial format, with the series Kulmapu, available for you during one week.

The series, co-produced by the production company Tres Tercios and VTR, immerses us in an audiovisual blog that observes in a thoughtful, critical and curious way the news of the Mapuche people. Each episode invites us to discover the plurinational reality of Chile, breaking down myths and rescuing the cultural richness of this first nation, without folklore or stigmatizing its existence.

Led by journalist Pedro Cayuqueo, the first season of Kulmapu shows complex ideas about the construction of identity of the Mapuche within an invisibilizing country, seeing the ways in which culture has managed to permeate the Chilean State. Traditional medicine, conscious cooking and musical collaborations are explored through interviews, documentary capsules, archive material and educational animations.

This time we are sharing with you the first and second episodes of the first season. In the first episode, they arrive at Andrés Coliqueo Community in the ninth region, to talk with the only soccer player who has scored goals in two World Cups playing for Chile. In the land where he grew up, Jean Beausejour Coliqueo tells about his Mapuche identity. The stories of Kalfüllufken Paillafilu, musician and professor of history at the Liceo Intercultural Guacolda in Cholchol, will also be presented. Both stories share the same starting point: the passion to contribute to cultural integration from different everyday contexts.

In the second episode it will be possible to appreciate the exhibition "Wenu Pelón" by visual artist Francisco Huichaqueo. In this place we will reflect on the importance of making the Mapuche tradition visible everywhere and showing it as the living culture that it is. You can also visit an enclave of Mapuche culture at the top of Cerro Blanco in Recoleta next to the lawentuchefe María Quiñelen and the experience of Gonzalo Luanko, a Mapuche teacher and rapper from the commune of El Bosque.

Directed by Pablo Arias, Rodrigo Moreno and Allan Bortnic, the series was created with the goal of generating original content about the Mapuche culture, in a quest search for the abandonment of stereotypes and the empowerment of a living culture, positioned in the present and not in the past. It was financed by VTR, and in addition to the people already mentioned, it has interviews with soccer player Jean Beausejour, designer Ariel Traipi, among many others.

Tres Tercios, the production company behind Kulmapu, has been set up in Chile since 2011, with the mission of creating original content for the various platforms of the audiovisual sector. Their works are full of innovation and creativity, always looking for the best way to tell the stories or generate a different audiovisual experience for the viewers. This is why they develop authorial projects where the director can be able to explore and find his own voice, and is formed by Jeremy Hatcher, Simón Vargas, Pablo Arias and Allan Bortnic.

Among their most outstanding projects are the short films “Apnea” (San Sebastián Film Festival 2012), “El bienestar de Julio” (Sanfic 2012), “Hermano” (Best Lakino Short Film 2015), the medium-length film “Las Ruinas del Oro” with the singer Camila Moreno, and the feature film “Sobre los muertos”, which won the award for best director at SANFIC 2018.
