Documentary “News” and short film “Austral Fever” shine in the third edition of Chilean Cinema Thursday’s

Documentary “News” and short film “Austral Fever” shine in the third edition of Chilean Cinema Thursday’s

It’s the third edition of Chilean Cinema Thursdays, a space where Cinemachile releases national films that can be streamed worldwide, free for 7 days. This week we take a look at three directors; two of them with a consecrated career, and one emerging talent who awed and made headlines during 2019. It’s time to CATCH UP and DISCOVER!

The feature film of the week is News, directed by Bettina Perut and Iván Osnovikoff, a filmmaking duo who have set a precedent in Chilean documentary. With a body of work of spanning 20 years and 8 films, they have delivered a radical perspective on cinema, constantly placing our society’s moral standards in tension. In 2009,  News had its international premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and in Chile at the Valdivia International Film Festival. Despite the fact that 11 years have passed since then, the film remains extremely relevant to our current social scenario.

As Perut + Osnovikoff’s website states, News is a challenge for the spectator. In part because it expresses a radical point of view by creating a universe estranged from the dominant discourse on reality. Its images, many of which are extreme, express a sense of time, composition, and color that are situated in the antipodes of what we consume day by day in movies and TV. Today we invite you to turn off your television to watch another type of “News”.

Accompanying this documentary, the third edition of Chilean Cinema Thursdays takes a look at Austral Fever by Thomas Woodroffe, the most-awarded short film of 2019. The film boasted quite the international run after premiering in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival.

Austral Fever is an atmospheric exploration that reflects upon the thin line that exists between pleasure and pain. It’s a film that ponders the body, one’s own personal perception of it, and the limits of its sensibility. It stars Francisca Gavilán, Nicolás Sobarzo, Roberto Villena, and José Soza.

The films will be available until next Thursday, April 16th, when we will announce another selection, from new and renowned talents, to be made viewable free of charge. If possible, stay home and enjoy these titles. Let’s all take care of ourselves and each other.
