\u00a0<\/b>Chile returns this year to the European Film Market <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>EFM) with more than 20 producers participating in the virtual event and with <\/span><\/i>The Land of Savages\u00a0<\/i><\/b>(Fernando Guzzoni, F\u00e1bula) in the Official Selection of the Co-Production Market.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Still energized by CHILE, COUNTRY IN FOCUS 2020 <\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

In 2020, Chile had the great honor of being\u00a0the Focus Country of the Berlinale EFM, an unprecedented milestone for our industry made possible by the support of the APCT, ProChile and MINCAP, reaffirming that our country is a creative powerhouse with global impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 70 producers and directors brought their projects in development to the market and set the tone for the future of Chilean cinema\u00a0 in areas such as the Producers Hub, the Berlinale Series Market, and Doc Salon, among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that time, amid the bustling activity of the Martin Gropius Bau, no one imagined that it would be the last time in the year that a Chilean delegation would travel abroad, our last face-to-face event before the pandemic confined us all. So now we enthusiastically return to the EFM, which will have to be in a virtual setting,\u00a0 until we can meet again.<\/span><\/p>\n

“After the unforgettable milestone of Chile Country in Focus of EFM 2020 that marked our industry, our country continues with a great presence in the market this year, with a new digital dynamic, but no less effective. A great national presence that benefits the entire sector: cinema, series and animation, documentary and short film, made possible thanks to the support of the APCT, Ministry of Culture and Prochile. Despite the global difficulties, our sector lifts itself up once again”, affirms our Executive Director, Constanza Arena.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, 11 of the producers who will be participating in this instance, were supported by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, MinCAP, through the Assistance Program for International Markets -of the Art and Audiovisual Industry Council (CAIA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting today and until the 5th of March, we will of course be present at this unmissable event on CinemaChile\u2019s agenda, to capture and follow up on the energy that Chile Country left us in Focus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Co-production Market has brought us some exciting news: the selection of\u00a0<\/span>The Land of the Savages<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>by\u00a0Fernando Guzzoni, the director’s upcoming fourth fiction feature produced by Roc\u00edo Jadue (Fabula).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Co-production Market also includes the participation of 35 films, and it will be interesting to see how Guzzoni approaches a new narrative with the characteristics of his particular author-driven gaze, acclaimed in his debut feature\u00a0<\/span>Carne de perro<\/i><\/b> (San Sebasti\u00e1n, 2012) and \u00a0<\/span>Jesus <\/i><\/b>(Toronto and San Sebasti\u00e1n, 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n

This new film also sees Guzzoni join creative forces with Roc\u00edo Jadue, Head of Latin American Film for F\u00e1bula.\u00a0More recently, Jadue worked on <\/span>Nobody Knows I’m Here,\u00a0<\/i><\/b>by Gaspar Antillo\u00a0 (Tribeca, 2020) and\u00a0<\/span>A Fantastic Woman<\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>(Berlin, 2018), directed by Sebasti\u00e1n Lelio, winner of Chile\u2019s first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roc\u00edo’s career in F\u00e1bula dates back to 2012 when she was executive producer of\u00a0<\/span>No<\/i><\/b>, Chile’s first Oscar-nominated film, by Pablo Larra\u00edn.\u00a0She has worked on a total of 15 productions, which have premiered at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance and Tribeca, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, Guzzoni is also developing\u00a0<\/span>Blanquita\u00a0<\/i><\/b>, produced by Giancarlo Nasi (Quijote) based on one of Chile\u2019s most gruesome political sex scandals of the last decade: the \u201cSpiniak affair\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both this work and\u00a0<\/span>La tierra de los Salvajes\u00a0<\/i><\/b>highlight the director’s interest in scandals that captivate the general public, as part of a constant search to establish a dialogue with real life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chile represented in Berlinale Talents with 4 women creators!<\/h3>\n

Four filmmakers will represent Chilean cinema at BERLINALE TALENTS, and they will have the opportunity to capacitate themselves and learn in a variety of occasions presented by this platform. Their work is diverse and multifaceted, and they represent the future generation of Chilean cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amparo Baeza<\/b> is an art director that has worked in White on White by Th\u00e9o Court (Venice Horizons Award Winner, 2019), Rara by Pepa San Mart\u00edn (Generation Grand Prix, Berlinale 2016), and The Man of the Future by Felipe G\u00e1lvez (Karlovy Vary, 2019) among others. She is an avid collector and rescuer of found objects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Claudia Gallardo<\/b>, on the other hand, has been in charge of set design on pieces like <\/span>The Prince<\/span><\/i> (Sebasti\u00e1n Mu\u00f1oz, Venice 2019), and <\/span>El Bosque de Karadima<\/span><\/i> (Mat\u00edas Lira, Havana 2015).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Francisca S\u00e1ez<\/b> shined for her work on <\/span>H\u00e9ctor<\/span><\/i> (Victoria Giesen, Berlinale Shorts 2019), constructing an enigmatic, sensorial journey through its cinematography. She has also worked with Costa Rican director Sof\u00eda Quir\u00f3s, most recently on <\/span>Land of Ashes<\/span><\/i> (Critics\u2019 Week at Cannes 2019).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9phine Schroder<\/b>, on her part, founded Pequ\u00e9n Producciones in 2016 along with director Karin Cuyul, who in 2019 premiered <\/span>Story of my Name<\/span><\/i> at Rotterdam, receiving the Jury Special Mention in the Bright Future category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Berlinale Talents is one of the most prestigious spaces of formation in the world and unites more than 300 new filmmakers every year from all areas, offering them a space for exchange with big directors, in addition to being present at other strategic points during the year, such as Buenos Aires and Guadalajara.<\/span><\/p>\n

To Kill Pinochet<\/i><\/b> by Juan Antonio Sabatini (Global Screen), which premiered in Havana, is a film that journeys through the gray areas of a human being, constructing complex characters and extreme situations \u2014 a political thriller inspired by real events.<\/span><\/p>\n

La Ver\u00f3nica<\/i><\/b> by Leo Medel (Filme Boutique) is an intimate and risk-taking film made up of only closeup shots, exploring the universality and incomprehensibility of the human face. It premiered during San Sebasti\u00e1n in the Latin Horizons section.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nahuel and the Magic Book<\/i><\/b> by Germ\u00e1n Acu\u00f1a (Latido Films), which premiered in Annecy, is a 2D animated film that mixes adventure, fantasy, and the myths of the Chilean South, and includes executive production by the winners of the 2016 Oscar for Best Animated Short, Punkrobot.<\/span><\/p>\n
