While the expectations for <\/span><b><i>My Tender Matador <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep building up, <\/span><b><i>Aurora <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives us key clues to understand Sep\u00falveda\u2019s author-driven point of view and\u00a0 cinematographic trajectory. \u00a0 Along with this film we also invite you to watch the short film by the talented director and editor Melisa Miranda, <\/span><b><i>Medulla <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(IDFA, 2014). Both films ask audiences difficult questions about motherhood and grief, one a fiction feature based on real events, and the other through an autobiographical documentary format.<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8316\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8316 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemachile.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Aurora_-e1599749783430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aurora<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b><i>Aurora, <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amparo Noguera (<\/span><b><i>Death shall come and\u00a0 will have your eyes<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) plays the role of Sof\u00eda, a teacher who is in the process of wanting to adopt a child, and reads in the newspaper that a newborn has been found dead in a garbage dump. Sof\u00eda becomes obsessed with the fate of the child who, legally, has no rights to a name or to be buried. Sof\u00eda starts a legal campaign to be able to bury \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aurora,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d a struggle that ends up having\u00a0 profound consequences in her life.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with CinemaChile in 2015, Sep\u00falveda told us about the creative process that brought <\/span><b><i>Aurora <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to life and the real events that inspired the script:\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; I was interested in the case because it was difficult to understand, but very moving.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role of Noguera was inspired by a woman named <\/span><b>Bernarda, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real life lives in Puerto Montt (southern Chile), and\u00a0 adopts and buries babies found in garbage dumps. <\/span><b>Rodrigo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained that when he met her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;she had\u00a0 already buried three children and today she has buried five, in addition to adopting two other living children.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b><i>Aurora<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sep\u00falveda established himself as an expert in directing actors, transmitting through the film Noguera&#8217;s emotional pulse as she goes through various difficult emotions and stages. The film also features powerful performances by Luis Gnecco (<\/span><b><i>Neruda<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Jaime Vadell (<\/span><b><i>Post mortem <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and was edited by Jos\u00e9 Luis Torres Leiva (<\/span><b><i>The wind knows that I\u2019m<\/i><\/b> <b><i>coming back home<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Andrea Chignoli (<\/span><b><i>Spider<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). It was produced by Forastero, the same production company\u00a0 that produced <\/span><b><i>My Tender Matador.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our other featured film this week is <\/span><b><i>Medulla,<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a short doc that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explores maternity with the same level of depth and reflective language, but now looking at the personal and intimate experiences lived by the director, Melisa Miranda. Mixing archival material with evocative fragments, the film explores the aftermath of a stroke that Miranda&#8217;s mother had. Constructed with skillful editing techniques, Miranda searches for the lost memory of a woman she never really knew, and who is now more indecipherable than ever. Through sincerity and healing, the film looks for a way to recover the lost image of a body that Miranda never managed to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8317\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8317 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cinemachile.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/me\u0301dula.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/antes.cinemachile.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/me\u0301dula.jpg 500w, https:\/\/antes.cinemachile.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/me\u0301dula-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Medulla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a resounding success in festivals around the world, it premiered at IDFA (Amsterdam Documentary Film Festival), was exhibited in Iraq, Ecuador and India and was awarded at the Berlin Lakino Festival, Surdocs, Femcine and the Iquique Film Festival, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melisa Miranda has shown herself to be one of the most important documentary editors in Chile, leading the montage process of films such as\u00a0 <\/span><b><i>Adriana\u00b4s Pact <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Lissette Orozco (Berlinale, 2017) and <\/span><b><i>The Journey of Monalisa <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Nicole Costa (IDFA, 2019), among many others. She is currently editing <\/span><b><i>Albertina y los muertos <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by C\u00e9sar Borie and <\/span><b><i>Las cautivas<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Peruvian documentary by Natalia Maysundo.
